Pro Comp X-Terrain Tire Review
2005 Jeep LJ, with 4 Pro-Comp lift
When I had my gears and lockers installed I noticed it was time to add some new rubber to my rig, so I shopped around and was looking at a directional mud terrain tire that would hold up to rocks, mud, and the rigors of a long daily commute. Most of us use our rigs not only for trail runs on the weekend but also use it as a daily driver during the week and we need a tire that can do well in both worlds. The Pro Comp X-Terrain has fit the bill so far. Ive reached 5, 000 miles on these tires and I have been very happy with their overall performance.
Highway Performance
For a commute of 60 miles, these tires are pretty quiet for a MT type of tire on the highway. Theres a little bit of hum at higher speeds but you get used to it quick, and at slower speeds, but then again this is an MT and not an all-terrain tire so there will be some noise. So far in wet conditions the X-Terrains have held their ground and they feel very solid on the highway.
Off Road Performance
I have been running these tires mostly at Hollister OHV Park which has a great mix of rocks, mud, and dirt trails to give these tires an all around test. On the rocks the X-Terrains really held traction and rarely slipped (and those where in very extreme conditions). Aired-down, even at 20psi, the Pro-Comp tires conformed and wrapped around the rocks really well and provided great traction. At lower PSI these tires will crawl their way over anything. The side walls have also held up very well as I have rubbed (ok abused them) against some very sharp rocks. On dirt and mud the X-Terrains have pretty good as well however I havent really had the chance to try them out in deep gooey mud.
Final Words
Again, I have been pleased with the X-Terrains both on the highway and on the trail. These tires are pretty soft and may not have the longevity of an all-terrain however that is not the main purpose of this tire and when buying any MT you have to keep this in mind. With that being said, the X-Terrains are a great tire that performs well both as a daily driver tire and as a trail tire.
